Yes, you're right, given the amount of money I spend on books each year, and the charity bought ones often lead to other purchases, I shouldn't get too worried about this. I still like to try to make sure the author does profit from my reading though. And I would like to think that an author should be able to take a holiday on their earnings for their labour and creativity - everyone else does. No worse than borrowing a book from a friend (and even though I know library borrowing does theoretically give something to an author I don't imagine it puts food on the table for many with the pennies they probably accrue).
