Lazy Sunday Service

All being well, this post should be published when I am over the Atlantic en route to Chicago.  Unfortunately I don't have a copy of Barbara Fister's In The Wind with me as it 'got lost in the post'.  I'll have to try and source another copy when I get back.  I'll be spending the flight, however, not reading but trying to finish off an academic paper.  Like everything else at present these have turned into a just-in-time endeavour.  Somehow I've committed to writing twelve papers and book chapters between now and mid-July.  If I churn them out at one per week I'll be fine.  What could go wrong!

My posts this week
Blown
Review of Blacklands by Belinda Bauer
Review of The Circle by Dave Eggers

So near and yet so far. Have fun in Chicago. If you have time, take the architectural boat trip. So much fun.

Enjoy Chicago - it should be fascinating from your "smart cities" perspective. The Chicago Police Department was an early adopter of using data - not just to map crime but also to gather and push data about individuals and their associations to the cop on the street. I remember reading about it years ago and finding it a bit scary, but now I suspect it's much more sophisticated and ubiquitous everywhere.

Good luck with all of your papers and chapters. That's what you get for being so smart yerself.

(And hope if the book ever arrives that you enjoy it!)

Barbara, yes, the Chicago police have moved on a bit. Now also into anticipatory governance - trying to identify and put on notice those who its algorithms think might commit a crime. I tried searching for your book today in a couple of stores - but no luck. What I need to get better at re. writing is saying no to requests. I'm getting better, but still manage to over-commit.
