Lazy Sunday Service

Given the rapid fall off in comments and some of the discussion online complaining about Blogger's captcha setting I've decided to turn off the word verification to post comments for now and see how I get on. You'd think that Blogger could work out a decent spam filter that would negate the need for captcha and if they're going to persist in using it, then you'd think they could come up with a system that is useable. At the minute the words are unreadable and they're sure as hell unlistenable if you have visual impairments. Anyway, I hope it is now easier for people to comment.

My posts this week
Shots of noir
Review of Choke on Your Lies by Anthony Neil Smith
Being jolted out of a story
Review of Manchester 6 by Col Bury
Review of Star Island by Carl Hiassen

I think the unreadability is something to do with the level of captcha they have implemented Rob. I have found that their spam filter will pick up all comments left by Anonymous. I may get brave enough to turn off moderation soon too.

one thing I have noticed though is that the notification of follow up comments seems to have disappeared too. There used to be a link you could click for that but I haven't seen that on any blogs I've visited in the last few days.

Thanks for doing that, Rob.

I, for one, not being in my 20s any more, far from it, can't read many of the word verifications at all. I end up guessing the word jumble, not always correctly. Then I can't read the second jumble either.

So, I'm commenting less on the blogosphere and am concerned others aren't either.

Or I'm going to have to go out and buy the best magnifying glass I can find!

My question is are the word verifications tested on any human population, including people over 50? And if there anywhere to send complaints about this system?

The previous word verification format was easier on the eye while the new one is rather taxing, but it won't stop me from commenting on informative blogs such as yours. I can see I have a lot of catching up to do here.

It will be interesting to see if opening up your site will encourage more comments.

I used get lonely spammers wandering by to post nonsense, so have continued to use word verification.

Hence a very quiet blog is the result.
